Commentaire: Incorporating some two dozen ABBA songs, this had a workable and funny plot-line, inspired by Willy Russell’s “Shirley Valentine” and a Gina Lollobrigida film called “Buona Sera, Mrs Campbell”. Mamma Mia” was camp, fast-moving, great fun and a big hit with the critics and public alike. (It was a Broadway hit in 2001, and in 2008 became a successful film, with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan).

Commentaire: Following the original London production at the Bridewell, Sondheim permitted an off-Broadway staging which ran for 45 performances in Feb/March 2000. For the Broadway version Sondheim incorporated two new song/scenes, "Delighted, I'm Sure" and "Montana Chem", did some revisions to the original book, and some new musical arrangements by Jonathan Tunick. This London revival was the UK premiere of the revised off-Broadway score. After a month at the Jermyn Street Theatre it transferred to the Arts Theatre for a further three weeks.

Commentaire: This turned out to be much more than a jukebox musical, and was superbly directed as a kind of show-business documentary saga moving across the decades and also providing concert-style performance interludes of some of the best-loved songs of the era. It opened on Broadway in November 2005 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The London production was re-created by the New York team, and won an Olivier as the Best New Musical of 2008.

Commentaire: This touring production was as near as possible a complete re-creation of the original version from 40 years earlier - with some added significance in that Jerome Robbins had died a few months prior to its revival. Several critics felt the magnificent show had a whiff of mothballs about it, and needed a completely new approach (like the current “Oklahoma” at the National Theatre.) The “dream ballet” was especially felt to be very dated, and the finger-clicking routines seemed over-choreographed and lacking spontaneity for today’s audiences.) However, others felt it held up extremely well and everyone agreed it remained one of the most brilliant scores in musical theatre. It ran for fifteen weeks at the Prince Edward and then transferred to the Prince of Wales for another year, closing January 8th 2000.

Commentaire: This was a completely revised version of “Jeeves”, the 1975 flop, re-titled “By Jeeves”. Instead of the large-scale original, the new version was a small-scale play with songs. Ayckbourn had thrown out the aunts and the pigs and all the other eccentric stuff and created an entirely new plot: Bertie intends to play his banjo at a charity performance at the local village hall but Jeeves hides the offending instrument. Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with eight new songs with five songs retained from the original. This time it was a success, described as “one of the slickest comebacks since Lazarus”. However, it still only managed just over a six month run:

Commentaire: This show held the record as the longest running all-black off-Broadway show, running for eight years, playing to over 3 million people and taking something like £38 million at the box office in stagings through Europe, Asia and Japan. Commentaire: After 19 years at the Palace Theatre the production was moved to the smaller Queen’s Theatre (the Palace needed considerable renovation to meet safety standards). In order to fit into the new space the scenery was reduced in size and the physical production needed shrinking. The most controversial aspect of the move was the size of the orchestra. The Palace pit accommodated 21 musicians, but the Queen’s could only hold 11. The rest of the sound was provided by a computer. The Musicians Union threatened a strike, but capitulated when Cameron Mackintosh claimed the only alternative was to close the show. The critics generally agreed that the “reduced” version had suffered no loss of richness or texture, and the new orchestral sound was perfectly satisfactory thanks to the new-fangled “Sinfonia” computer. Having now been seen by more than 50 million people in 38 countries and 21 languages, “Les Mis” had now become the most successful musical of all time. (plus)

Carl Tucker (the composer) was heavily promoted as being “from Vienna”, and the leading lady, Rosalinde Fuller, a well known classical actress, was promoted as having begun her career at the Folies Bergère. It was this mish-mash of musical styles that made the show heavy-going - dance sequences such as “South Sea Idyll” and a Valse Scena, acrobats and a mouth-organ speciality didn’t really fit alongside its romantic story. It ran its contracted month at the Adelphi and then transferred for a further six weeks at the Prince’s Theatre (Shaftesbury) - but never really caught on. (When Rosalinde Fuller died in 1982, aged 90, it was discovered that she had had an affair in 1920 with the author F.Scott Fitzgerald and was the inspiration for the chorus girl character in his novel “Head and Shoulders”) (plus)
